First Grade Page
Welcome to the 2011-2012 year in First Grade.
New updates coming as we learn new activites. As we go through the 2011-2012 school year, we will be removing last year's clips, and adding new clips from this year. We are already taping!!!!
Welcome to the First Grade Music Class Page. In First Grade we continue with the "keeping the beat" work we did in Kindergarten. Now, though, it gets harder. We have to keep the beat and do rhymes, keep the beat and do motions, or keep the beat while playing instruments. Soon we will have examples of classes doing all of these activities.

New - for 2012 "The Fire Dance"
We learn to listen carefully to all different kinds of music. "The Fire Dance" tells a story without any words, or any pictures. By listening to the clues in the music, we know when and how to do the dance. Watch us do this really cool (or hot) dance.

Crazy 8 brain game
This is a brain game that the 2nd and 3rd Grades do. For an experiment, we just tried it. Miss Georgoff's class surprised Mrs. J because they figured it out on the first try!!!!
First Grade Stations
New for 2011-2012... First Grade Stations. We do stations in the 2nd and 3rd Grade, but haven't tried Music Stations in First Grade until this year. Here are a few video clips of some first Grade classes doing rhythm writing, music reading, music dictation, and finding the right notes on the xylophones.
NEW FOR 2010 - A "LINE" SQUARE DANCE
First Grade classes have been busy learning to keep the beat with their feet, (and hands and everything else all at the same time) by learning to do a new dance called the "Chimes of Dunkirk." It's like a square dance, but we do it in two lines. Below are some video clips of the different classes doing a section of the dance. (Coming soon for 2011)

String Family
In First Grade we continue what we started in Kindergarten. We learn to READ beats as well as keep the beat. We learn to really listen to different kinds of music so our ears can pick out what the music is doing and what instruments are playing. Right now we are learning about the STRING FAMILY of instruments. That family has violins, cellos, harps, guitars and any instrument that makes it's music by vibrating strings. Everybody in First Grade had a chance to play a real violin as part of our String Family unit. Here is a clip demonstrating what we all did.(2010)
Vivaldi's Spring - a movement/listening activity
Watch our First Graders act out the story of "Spring" from "The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. They must listen to the changes in the music to know when and how to move. This is a story with no pictures and no words.
2010 New- First Grade Flames
The First Grades are trying a new listening/movement activity this semester. It's called the "Fire Dance" by de Falla. The music tells a story, but there is no singing and no words. The students act out the story by listening to the clues in the music. Here are some of the First Grades acting out the story of the flames in the "Fire Dance." (2010)
